Jawel, deze bar is genoemd naar een Nederlandse kunststroming.
"Weet je dat zeker?" vroeg Maria. "Het klinkt Albanees."

Yes, this bar was named after a Dutch art movement.

What sounds strange? That Destijl was a dutch art movement or that it sounds Albanian ? Albanian has a lot of 'j's especially in the end of words, like the word 'distiloj' which means 'distill' and looks a lot like 'destijl'.
"Distill", "distillery" that's not a bad name for a bar. And there is no shame being an Albanian. It's OK. :-)

That's pretty clever, that you thought of distilleries. I hadn't thought of that but the similarity is striking.

I guess that the owner of the bar saw this word, didn't know it was Dutch, thought it was Albanian for distill(ery), wanted to get more Albanian customers and named his bar this way. Or perhaps he named it after cafe Destijl in San Francisco (see website).

The Dutch language has a lot of "ij", which sounds very much like in "κλέει". In fact, the canal that passes north of Amsterdam Central Station is called "IJ". Yes, with a double capital, because this combination is so common, that both letters are capitalised, not only the first.

Ha Onno, Ik ben deze zomer op 2 plaatsen in Griekenland een cafe tegen gekomen met de naam DeStijl.
Die naam verbaasde me. De eerste is in Corfu-stad en de andere in Plataria.
