Mistral at Mystras

Mystras, Greece, august 25, 2003.
"You will have sunny weather all week," said the man from the car rental company in Kalamata.
We were going to Mystras, a medieval archeological fortified city near Sparti. And there a giant wind started blowing. All sand, dried out by weeks of heat, hit us in the eyes, ears, nose and other openings. Somewhere under a gate we had to take shelter. There were ten other visitors hiding. Not that it helped much, because the sand was everywhere. When I opened my camera that night, a beam of sand came poring out that would make an hour glass jealous.
After the wind came the thunder and the rain. From our high position we could see the lightning strike ground below us. On the above picture, the first shower has passed and the second is coming down from the mountains.

Maria kijkt een vertrekkende onweersbui na.
