Bullets in the bottom

Greece, Ioannina, lake Pamvotis, april 25, 2005, 14:31. Onnoot goes with parents and sister to the island of Ioannina. The island is often called "Nisi" by tourists. But that is not a name: nisi means island. On the left of this photo is the island, right are the trees surrounding the castle and in the distance the snowy tops of mount Lakmos.

14:35. Lidy and Claire on the boat to the island.

14:37. A fisherman at work near the island.

14:43. "Hi guys. What are you doing?"

15:03. Old house on the island. Just when we were thinking: nobody lives there, a man walked out of the door.

15:05. Flowers in a lost corner.

15:15. Lidy, Tjerk and Claire are resting near a giant plane tree in front of the museum dedicated to Ali Pasha.

15:16. The employees of the museum are bored. The woman in red tries to burn paper waiste inside the canon. This building used to be a monastery. When dictator Ali Pasha was surrounded by the sultans soldiers, het took refuge in this monastery. He was shot from below in his bottom through the wooden floor; that's how he came to his end. The bullet holes are still visible in the floor.

15:21. A painting in the museum shows how the head of Ali Pasha was presented to the sultan, as proof of his death.

16:02. A bench and a boat on the shore of the island. The water here was filled with dead fish. If you come to the island, don't eat fish, unless it's seafish.

16:36. The boat trip back to the island offers a nice view to the mosque inside the castle.
